Blythian Memes Collection
Blythian Memes Collection is an experimental animation by multi-media artist Dex Hannon capturing the essence of his hometown, Blyth in Northumberland. The film features distinctive landmarks and quirky local spaces, etched in his memory - all absorbed while walking the area with his dogs. These are a selection of buildings or objects that have become 'memes' in his mind— images he instantly associates with Blyth - seamlessly woven into the fabric of his experience of living there.
The film is a visual exploration of repeating and morphing patterns and throughout this narrative, a symbolic, totemic sculpture is recurring - The iconic Wind Turbine now so strongly associated with the town.
Hannon describes it "From Coal to Wind: This towering structure not only punctuates the Blyth skyline but serves as a bold emblem of the future. It heralds a new era of power, supplanting the historical prominence of coal in Blyth's narrative. "
Hannon says the film was not the end of the process for him, as he examined the footage for interesting compositions, extracting frames to rework into new digital artworks or the beginnings of new films.
"I only recently realised the way I work has been influenced by the very place I now live. Blyth is becoming the centre of the UK for renewable energy, reusing the elements to power the country. In turn, I re-use the fabric of my films to create new art."
The film has now been part of exhibitions in London, Suffolk, Peru, Venice and recently in Blyth.
