Helen McKnockiter

Helen is an artist and children's book illustrator based at Edrom in the Scottish Borders. She grew up in Africa and spent time as a teenager in Australia, countries which have undoubtedly influenced how she paints.

Helen says she needs to be outside in fresh, clean air in order to thrive and is fascinated by flowers, plants and trees, which feature in most of her work, which is mainly acrylic on canvas.

"I just love everything about them, the way they look side-by-side their colours and how they move in the breeze".

She's also obsessed by pointillism, something that features heavily in her work. It not only allows her to insert pattern and texture into her pieces, but also reflects part of her life's journey. The spots and dots are a nod to beautiful African and Aboriginal patterns that surrounded her as a child.

Helen says she is still on a voyage of discovery and her work constantly evolving. "I learn something new about myself with each painting."
